About 13 years ago we found out that our daughter Kirra had Tetralogy of Fallot, a complex congenital heart defect, in the course of what we expected to be a routine 20 week scan. We are so fortunate that she was born in a time and place where specialist care is readily available, and decades of research allowed doctors to provide a good prognosis with timely surgical intervention. In 2012 my father-in-law had a heart attack and is doing well. In 2016 my brother-in-law died at 53 from cardiac arrest. Last month my mother experienced heart failure. And we are just one family. Heart disease affects people at all life stages. Not everyone is picked up in routine screening like our daughter was. Many people live in places where life-saving surgical intervention is simply not available. This is why I am choosing to participate in Bridge to Brisbane this year, to help raise funds for research so that no one gets left behind.

The University of Queensland – IMB Cardiovascular Research
Heart attack is the number one killer of Australians, taking an average of 19 lives every day. Cardiovascular diseases can happen at any time in life from congenital diseases in developing foetuses to adult-onset diseases like heart attacks. Heart disease impacts Australians across all stages of life. Our team of researchers at UQ’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience are tackling cardiovascular disease through a range of innovative approaches from genes to cells to tissues, from cell and animal models to clinical care, gaining not only knowledge into the fundamental biology of the heart but also developing the next generation of novel therapeutics. By supporting our research, you will help change the lives of Australians impacted by cardiovascular disease.
